GALLERY AFTERNOON

Gallery Afternoon is pleased to present the group exhibition titled 《𝑷𝒊𝒄𝒏𝒊𝒄 𝒂𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒆》 featuring four artists: Hezin, Jung Hyunjin, Choi Sanho, and Yoo Suji, from April 6th (Saturday) to April 27th (Saturday), 2024.

《𝑷𝒊𝒄𝒏𝒊𝒄 𝒂𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒆》 conveys the joyous and serene experience of exploring myself and connecting with the world, akin to embarking on a picnic. Through this exhibition, we invite contemplation on what truly defines myself.

The journey of exploring "the most authentic self" often leads to profound introspection and seeking harmony with the world. While it may not lead to definitive conclusions, we hope this journey feels comforting and cozy.

The artworks of the four participating artists reflect diverse perspectives on "self" presented through vibrant colors and textures, inspiring fresh insights into the essence of "being myself" and fostering deep empathy.

Hezin (b. 1991) imagines and expresses a space that feels familiar yet unseen. In her envisioning, sun-drenched pots, steaming teacups, and cozy blankets adorn empty spaces, creating a paradoxical sense of warmth in unexperienced realms. With a background in spatial design, this artist sketches corners of interiors, capturing the vivid play of light and shadow within otherwise mundane spaces. She aspires to offer a snug haven amidst the hustle of reality, inviting weary minds to find solace in the simplicity of her art.

Hyeonjin Jeong (b.1993) has been fascinated with bringing stories to life visually since childhood, crafting characters and their backgrounds into paper dolls for theatrical play. Majored in interior design, Jeong's works exhibit a strong sense of spatial composition even in two-dimensional artworks. What sets Jeong's pieces apart is the sensation that the characters themselves are speaking, their gazes seeming to narrate stories. Transitioning from colored pencil drawings to oil paintings, Jeong's signature warm palette adds depth and warmth to the artworks. The serene posture of figures gazing upon nature invites viewers to imagine the stories and emotions they seek to convey.

Sanho Choi (b. 1983) paints the stories and emotions felt in everyday encounters. The ordinary takes on a special significance within the vivid palette of the seasons. From the gentle breeze to the scent of grass, from flowing rivers to the warmth of sunlight, Choi masterfully reproduces the universally familiar sensations with the sharp colors of oil pastels. A particularly striking aspect is his contrasting depiction of human figures gliding through the lush spring meadows, evoking a sense of refreshing intrigue.

Suzy Yoo(b.1995) expresses connections between nature, people, and the self. The artist infuses personal impressions and sensations into familiar landscapes, freely blurring boundaries by altering size, color, and form. Yoo's unique and flexible approach includes oversized flowers overshadowing figures, or individuals seemingly diminished within enlarged backgrounds, offering viewers a sense of liberation and evoking unique interpretations. Elements within her artworks intricately interconnect with their own colors and forms, conveying a message of meaningful transformation through engagement in each other's lives.
